The case leaves on a disc
A cine run is burned to CD at the end of the list — for the referrer, for the patient, for the file. Discs scratch, go missing, and arrive at an MDT unreadable. The old JVS-DiComPlus flyer asked the question fifteen years ago and it has not changed: how do you keep a stack of discs organised, and what happens when one is lost?
The hospital PACS is not the operator’s archive
Where a PACS accepts XA at all, retention, compression and purge policy are set for the institution, not for the interventionalist who wants their own series back three years later for an audit, a paper or a teaching file.
A network outage should not stop a list
Anything that depends on a live link to a central server becomes a reason to stop working. A cath lab cannot be waiting on a switch to review the run it just acquired.
One copy is not a copy
A single archive — disc, drive or server — is one incident away from gone. Hardware warranty replaces the box. It has never replaced the studies inside it.
Preserved locally. Preserved in the cloud.
Two copies with different failure modes. The local one is what clinicians read from and it never depends on a network. The off-device one exists for the day the local one does not.
On the device, at the table, offline
- The console sends the study straight to the lab’s own SoftDicom over the local network as a standard DICOM C-STORE. No CD, no export folder, no PACS administrator in the loop.
- The study is on the device the moment the run finishes, and is reviewable with the network unplugged.
- Digital Subtraction Angiography, cine playback and pixel-shift correction all run on the device itself.
- Roughly 5,000 studies fit on a 2 TB device — years of one lab’s work, in the lab.
Encrypted, off-site, restorable
- Cloud Backup keeps an encrypted copy of the studies you select, up to the full 2 TB.
- Encrypted on the device with AES-256 before anything leaves, TLS in transit, encrypted at rest.
- A lost, stolen or failed device restores onto a replacement SoftDicom — without going back to the modality.
- Included with the SoftDicom 2T at no extra cost for its five-year warranty term.
The cloud half is opt-in. Included with the SoftDicom 2T (2 TB) at no extra cost, free for its five-year warranty term. Not available on the 480 GB or 1 TB models. It is disabled when the device arrives, and with it disabled no study data leaves the lab at all.
Why one device per lab, not one for the department
No contention between labs
Each lab writes to its own device. A long case in Lab 2 cannot slow a review in Lab 1, and no lab is queued behind another lab’s transfer.
An outage is local and small
If the network drops, every lab still has its own complete local copy and carries on. There is no single box whose failure stops the whole department.
The operator keeps their own cases
The device travels. A consultant covering two sites carries their archive between them, and reviews it on any Mac, Windows or Linux machine with nothing to install.
One archive at group level
The cloud half can be pooled and administered centrally, so the group holds one off-device archive across every lab while each lab keeps its own local copy.

How a rollout runs
One device per lab
Each cath lab gets its own SoftDicom 2T. Sizing is per lab, not per department, so a high-volume lab is not rationed by a quiet one.
Point the console at it
SoftDicom listens as a DICOM Storage SCP with a configurable AE Title and port, and answers C-ECHO. Your angiography console is configured once, by whoever configures its other destinations.
Choose what leaves the lab
Cloud Backup is disabled on arrival. An administrator enables it and selects the studies or worklists that are copied off-device. Nothing is copied that was not selected.
Administer the group centrally
Pooled cloud capacity, retention and access across every lab are set once at group level under an enterprise agreement.
Questions
Does each cath lab need its own SoftDicom device?
That is the recommended deployment: one device per lab, so each lab holds a complete local copy of its own studies and no lab depends on another lab’s hardware or on the network being up. Cloud Backup then gives the group a single off-device archive across all of them.
Can studies be sent straight from the angiography console?
Yes. SoftDicom runs a standard DICOM Storage SCP with a configurable AE Title and listening port and answers C-ECHO verification, so any standards-compliant console can send to it directly over the local network. There is no CD burning and no PACS in between. The listener is disabled by default and is enabled by an administrator.
What happens to the lab if the network or the cloud is unavailable?
Nothing stops. The local copy on the lab’s device is complete and is what clinicians read from. Cloud Backup is a second copy that happens afterwards — it is never in the path between acquiring a run and reviewing it, and the device works fully with the network unplugged.
Is Digital Subtraction Angiography available on the device itself?
Yes. Mask-frame subtraction with pixel-shift correction for patient motion, and cine playback at an adjustable frame rate, run on the device. DSA is included with every SoftDicom model at no extra cost and needs no network.
Which model do cath labs need for the cloud copy?
The SoftDicom 2T (2 TB). Cloud Backup is included with that model at no extra cost for its full five-year warranty term, with up to 2 TB of encrypted cloud capacity. The 480 GB and 1 TB models hold studies locally but do not include Cloud Backup.
How is patient data protected once it leaves the lab?
Studies are encrypted on the device with AES-256 before they leave it, travel over TLS and remain encrypted at rest. Restores go only to an authorised SoftDicom device, and an administrator controls which studies are eligible to leave at all.
How do we deploy this across several hospitals?
Multi-site deployments are scoped with sales: one device per lab, pooled cloud capacity across the group, and central administration of retention and access under an enterprise agreement.
