Medical Image Viewer for CT, MRI, X-Ray and More

Eight modalities, five file formats, and nothing to install.

SoftDicom is a medical image viewer that lives on an external SSD. Plug it into a Windows, macOS or Linux machine and studies open straight from the drive — no installer, no admin rights, and no network connection required.

What imaging types does SoftDicom’s medical image viewer support?

SoftDicom’s viewer supports CT, MRI, X-Ray, Ultrasound, Mammography, PET/CT, SPECT and Cath-Lab imaging. It is fully compliant with DICOM Part 3, 4, 6, 10 and 14, so studies from any of these modalities open the same way.

What file formats does the viewer open?

Beyond native DICOM, the viewer opens JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP and NIfTI image files. Compressed DICOM studies are supported too.

NativeDICOM (Part 3, 4, 6, 10 and 14)
Compressed DICOMJPEG 2000, JPEG Lossless, RLE, JPEG Baseline
Other imagesJPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, NIfTI

Does the viewer need to be installed?

No. SoftDicom runs from an external SSD on Windows 10/11, macOS 11+ or Ubuntu 20.04+, with nothing to install and no administrator rights needed. The viewer, and the study database that organises what is on the drive, both live on the device itself, so it behaves as a portable image library rather than a folder of loose files — the portability case in full.

Platform specifics are on Linux and macOS.

Does it work without a network connection?

Yes. Studies are read directly from the drive, so the viewer is fully functional offline. Connected features such as cloud backup or direct console transfer are separate, opt-in capabilities that stay off unless an administrator turns them on.

What viewing tools does it include?

Window/level presetsCustomisable presets for all modalities
Cine modeAdjustable frame rate playback
Hanging protocolsCustomisable layout templates
AnnotationsText annotations on the study
RenderingGPU-accelerated visualisation

A standard CT or MRI series loads from the drive in under a second on a USB 3.2 port, because the images come off local flash rather than over a network.

Frequently Asked Questions

What imaging modalities can SoftDicom’s viewer open?

CT, MRI, X-Ray, Ultrasound, Mammography, PET/CT, SPECT and Cath-Lab studies, with full DICOM Part 3, 4, 6, 10 and 14 compliance.

What image and file formats does it support?

Native DICOM plus JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP and NIfTI, and compressed DICOM using JPEG 2000, JPEG Lossless, RLE or JPEG Baseline.

Do I need to install anything to view medical images?

No. The viewer runs from the external drive itself on Windows, macOS or Linux, with no installer and no admin rights required.

Can I view images without an internet connection?

Yes. All studies are read from local storage on the device, so the viewer works fully offline.

Does it include window/level and other viewing tools?

Yes — customisable window/level presets per modality, text annotations, cine playback at an adjustable frame rate, and customisable hanging-protocol layouts.

Every modality, one drive.

Plug it in on Windows, macOS or Linux and the studies are already there.
